Summary

The last thing Jamie Watson wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut prep school just an hour away from his estranged father。 But that’s not the only complication: Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes, the famous detective’s great-great-great-granddaughter, who has inherited not only Sherlock’s genius but also his volatile temperament。 From everything Jamie has heard about Charlotte, it seems safer to admire her from afar。

From the moment they meet, there’s a tense energy between them, and they seem more destined to be rivals than anything else。 But when a Sherringford student dies under suspicious circumstances, ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Jamie can no longer afford to keep his distance。 Jamie and Charlotte are being framed for murder, and only Charlotte can clear their names。 But danger is mounting and nowhere is safe—and the only people they can trust are each other。

3,75I really enjoyed my reading, it was so much fun! I am a huge Sherlock fan and I loved every parallel made with the original stories。 I liked the fact that in this universe Sherlock and Watson were real people and not fictional characters。 The only thing that bothered me a bit was the lack of credibility regarding some of the reactions of Jamie and Charlotte。 But it is ya fiction after all and putting that aside, the plot is still very interesting and believable。

I think I would have liked it more if there was less of the "romance"。 There was no chemistry whatsoever and I couldn't understand why Jamie was so obsessed with Charlotte right from the start。Content warning for Rape, murder, sexual harassment and drug abuse。 Maybe toxic behavior between "friends/partners"。 I think I would have liked it more if there was less of the "romance"。 There was no chemistry whatsoever and I couldn't understand why Jamie was so obsessed with Charlotte right from the start。Content warning for Rape, murder, sexual harassment and drug abuse。 Maybe toxic behavior between "friends/partners"。 。。。more

“And you’re still friends?” I asked。“Yes, of course,” my feather said。 “The two of us, we’re the best kind of disaster。 Apples and oranges。 Well, more like apples and machetes。”

Like, I don't know why the author made it sound like it was supposed to be cute just because Holmes is more "intelligent and mentally mature" or why she used it as a jealousy plot where the gap makes anything between them ILLEGAL。 Lastly, this author only level of research was on Sherlock Holmes because the fact that she statement things with the whole confidence of a white man, and it was wrong。 Here's correction without context:1。 Sound is vibration 2。 Deduction uses psychology 。。。more

A good read, very fun, but I didn’t have too much of an attachment towards the characters。 Will definitely be continuing the series。

Mystery is not my genre, but girl power is always on point。 They need to come up with more defined levels of "Young Adult"。 The drug use and sexual content is fine for my actual young adult niece that recommended this to me, but not for my preteen niece。 (My 13yo self would be cringing at my current level of ◼。) Fun read with a wildly implausible storyline。。。which is exactly why I prefer fiction to nonfiction。 Mystery is not my genre, but girl power is always on point。 They need to come up with more defined levels of "Young Adult"。 The drug use and sexual content is fine for my actual young adult niece that recommended this to me, but not for my preteen niece。 (My 13yo self would be cringing at my current level of ◼。) Fun read with a wildly implausible storyline。。。which is exactly why I prefer fiction to nonfiction。 。。。more

When I was about 40% through this book, I went to go read some reviews because I was having some mixed feelings and I was really surprised to see that so many people were talking about how fun this book was。 I did not have fun with this book。 This whole book was just fine。 The plot was fine, the characters were fine (though I didn't really love Charlotte)。 I am clearly in the minority with this opinion so maybe read some other reviews if you're planning on picking this up。 To start with the plot When I was about 40% through this book, I went to go read some reviews because I was having some mixed feelings and I was really surprised to see that so many people were talking about how fun this book was。 I did not have fun with this book。 This whole book was just fine。 The plot was fine, the characters were fine (though I didn't really love Charlotte)。 I am clearly in the minority with this opinion so maybe read some other reviews if you're planning on picking this up。 To start with the plot, I didn't really feel like the mystery got started until almost the 50% mark。 To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Sherlock Holmes style mysteries but I like fun YA mysteries but this was a bit too much like a Sherlock Holmes story for me。 I think Cavallaro is going for a bit of a grittier YA book and I think if that's what you want, she did a pretty good job。 It's just not what I was looking for。 I wanted a fun mystery and instead I got a story about a drug-addicted 16 year old, which is an interesting story, but not really what I was expecting。 The mystery itself was fine but somewhat predictable。 Some things were surprising but there were several points I saw coming。 This isn't a bad mystery, but definitely not mind blowing。 My real issue when it came to my enjoyment was the characters。 Charlotte Holmes is so similar to Sherlock that it was honestly a bit annoying to me。 I tend to chafe against plots that imply that genetics are very valuable so the fact that our characters act just like their ancestors really bothered me。 This book is written from Jamie's perspective and I don't know if it's just his hero worship of Charlotte, but his description of her made it seem like she was going through her "not like other girls" phase。 It's fine by me if you have more unlikable main character, I just want to be curious about them and be engaged by their character and I just wasn't in this book。 I didn't care much for Jamie either。 He just seemed dull for the most part and then suddenly he would go through a fit of anger。 He's not a bad narrator and I didn't hate Charlotte or anything, I just wasn't super engaged with their characters。 This was a fine book and it's clear that a lot of people do like it and would like it。 I wouldn't even necessarily be against reading the next book to see if it gets better for me personally but unfortunately, this one was a bit of a miss for me。 。。。more

Kerra Elsberry

I got about a fourth of the way through this and could not finish it。 The story is relatively interesting but the characters are both so aggressively annoying。 The Holmes/Sherlock narrative is at the surface level and brings nothing to the story other than to attempt to establish the characters as these amazing detectives。 It was not believable to me even with keeping in mind this is YA。 DNF and I have no plans to read anything from this author in the future。

Real score 4。0001。 You have to love a female Holmes, but I’m not sure about the love story。 Was fun though。

Lows: two-dimensional leading characters, general lack of depth, and unconvincing friendship/romance arc。 I bought this book in November after hearing good things and I was excited to dive into it。 I’m a sucker for a modern retelling and an even bigger sucker for descendants of famous dynamic duos-to-lovers, but I have to say, this book didn’t quite live up to expectations。 Now, that could very well be a result of an overactive imagination and high hopes, but even still, it is always disappointing when a book doesn’t live up to the potential you believe a story has。 While the plot was certainly interesting, the characters felt a bit two-dimensional and the bulk of their depth was reliant on the reader wanting a carbon copy of Sherlock/Watson from the original。 I made it about 40% into the book the first time I started reading it, but I never felt really taken by this book and compelled to finish it (mostly because I want to actually meet my reading goal this years)。 This could also be a product of the relative brain fog I’ve had all year, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt! I wanted desperately to like Charlotte。 She should have been exactly up my alley, but I often found it difficult to humanize her and she came off as more of a manic pixie dream girl for Jamie and at no point did I get the sense that she had been harbouring feelings for him, so the climax and resolution felt a bit forced to me。 In order to get a full sense of the story and characters, I’m going to finish the series before coming to an final judgments。 I’d say this is a solid 3 stars with the potential for the series to get to 4 stars overall。 Let’s hope it’s a slow start that ultimately redeems itself because I want to love these books。 。。。more

This is an AMAZING book。 I will warn that you have to be focused on the book to fully comprehend what is happening, but it is amazing。 I would recommend for kids in grades 6-8。 Also check out the rest of the Charlotte Holmes series!

meh。 it wasn’t bad at all but i didn’t enjoy the storyline, it was weird and the twists were predictable。 also the writing tended to try to sound more edgy to paint teenagers a certain way。

I enjoyed this book very much。 It reminded me of Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson which I absolutely loved! A Study in Charlotte is a wonderful YA take on the classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries set in a modern day boarding school located in Connecticut。 The descendants of Sherlock Holmes, Charlotte Holmes, and Dr。 Watson, Jamie Watson, come together to solve crimes that they are the center of (of course)。 Wonderful read!
